Chicken Skin in the Mango TreeRate this encounter: Kahealani, Haleiwa, Hawaii, 1987, email@example.com
First off, let me explain that in Hawaii you are raised to be suppositious from "small-kid time." I was always told that if you ever hear someone calling you from outdoors after dark, do not answer, or you will be taken away by some spirit, or 'Obake' as we call it.
When I was about 11 years old and quite obsessed with supernatural powers, witchcraft, ghosts, and such. Day after day I would hole up in my room and read every ghost book I could get my hands on. I would constantly question my parents about the various 'heiau' (Hawaiian graveyard/alters) that surrounded our neighborhood (Pupukea, North Shore, Oahu).
In our backyard we had two big mango trees which for some reason would scare the beejeezus out of me -- you could not get me to go back there in the dark even if my life depended on it. One night while in my room reading, I kept hearing my dad call me from the back yard. Being an obedient child, I answered him. When he called me again, I got scared remembering what I was taught when I was younger. I went into my parents room to check and see if my dad was outside and if not, and to see if indeed it was him calling me. To my surprise, he was on his bed watching TV and asked me why I was yelling for him. I explained to him what happened -- that I heard him calling for me from the back yard. He told me never to answer a call from outside unless I know for sure who it is I am answering and that he did not call for me.
Needless to say, I was scared to death and did not want to go back there even during the day. All the neighborhood kids would want to go back there and climb the trees, pick mango, or play hide-and-seek but day after day I would refuse. Like all kids though, I eventually forgot that night and went to play with my friends in the backyard.
We must have been playing back there all day -- I didn't realized until around sundown that it was getting late. I remembered the night someone called me from the backyard. The mango trees make good shade during the day, but at night, they make it even more dark. As I was walking very quickly around to the front of the house I heard my baby brother calling me, sounding really scared. For fear of getting in trouble (I am the oldest, with two younger brothers), I ran back to go get him. When I got to the corner of our house where I could see the backyard, something made me look up in the mango tree. To my horror, I saw a pair of glowing red eyes -- I ran into the house as fast as I could. I just opened the front door and saw my brother there at the kitchen table waiting for my mom to bring him his plate. After telling the story of my encounter in the back yard my mom tried to convince me I suffer from an overactive imagination. I am positive what I saw was not of this dimension and most certainly was a supernatural being. It's what we in Hawaii call "chicken skin."
