It is rare to find such a finely written look at the sacred tradition of Ancient Egypt, one that is both educational and entertaining. Circle of Isis is that book. The nonfiction work brings worship of the Ancient Egyptian deities into contemporary Pagan practice.
The author, Ellen Cannon Reed, wrote many books about Wicca, and followed the Wiccan path for over 25 years. One of her best known books is The Witches Qabala. She founded the Coven of Sothistar during 1977 and served as its High Priestess. Reed died in 2003, and her articulate writings will be missed.
Circle of Isis covers many intriguing topics. Among them are such items as songs for the deities, rituals for ancient gods and goddesses, information about hieroglyphs, two new forms of divination, how to make incenses and oil, and sources for statuary.
Tameran and Julian calendars are detailed. There are three parts to the book, and each part contains numerous topics. Among the topics are found Tehuti (Thoth), Asar (Osiris), Aset (Isis), Set, Shu, Bast, Sekhmet, meditations, rituals such as the Festival of Bast, magic and magical tools, and resources. Those who worship Bast will find this an interesting approach to that Goddess.
Circle of Isis is Ancient Egyptian Magic for modern Witches. As a reference, it is concise, accurate, and honest. As reading entertaining and a learning experience, it is topnotch. If you are interested in the many wonderful possibilities found in Ancient Egyptian magic, this book is highly recommended. A well-written book in all regards.
