Just to look through the illustrations in this extraordinary book is a delight! For readers who want something out of the ordinary, this collection is a fine addition to any home or public library. This book would make a fine gift for a friend!

Originally published in 1993, this new preface to the second edition adds additional insights and details. The introduction is concise and enjoyable.

The chapter titles reflect the subject matter, and the text with illustrations makes each something to go back for again and again. Among the topics are found astrology and cosmology, Kabbalah and the Tree of Life, initiation, magick and the gods, secret societies (this chapter is an eye opener!), sexuality, alchemy, tarot, symbolism and visionary art, and notes on the text.

The suggested reading list gives each chapter sources for further reading. The many books listed as reference are ideally suited to the chapters.

This is a beautifully illustrated book, and the text matches the illustrations in its honesty and approach. Highly recommended.
