Diana L. Paxson is well-known to readers of fantasy and historical novels. In Taking Up the Runes, she gives an entertaining and factual approach to using runes, and in fact, this is the best workbook of its type currently available. It is a fascinating reference and you will definitely come to intimately understand the great possibilities found in the ancient Norse alphabet.
As a guide, this book should become required reading for those seriously interested in runes. There is much psychic, spiritual, and magickal implications in runes.
Following an informative and well-conceived introduction, the book is divided into two parts. Part one is “The Runes.” There are fourteen chapters in this section. Part two is “The Rituals.” There are fifteen chapters in this section. Runic initiation, pronunciation guide, and bibliography are included in this fine book.
For those interested in the rituals and spells found with the use of runes, this is added incentive to purchase the book. As a reference, it is top notch in its discussion of runes.
