Originally published in 1996, it is good to see this nonfiction work available again. Stephen Harrod Buhner has written a fine book detailing the processes employed by Native Americans for connecting with the plant world. The purpose of this connection is for the healing of human illness.
This book deals with how indigenous peoples communicate with plants. The discussion of medicinal use and ceremonial use is well-explained in clear, concise terms. The importance of the sacredness of plants is covered.
Following the foreword by Brooke Medicine Eagle, both the preface to the new edition and the preface to the first edition are presented. The twelve chapters which follow are precise and educational. Chapter 10 and Chapter 11 are important chapters in that each discusses sacred plants and their uses as medicine. Notes, and a suggested readings with herbal apprenticeship program guide is also included.
Many of these plants are well-known to every reader, but the depth and feeling the author gives to each in explaining them is well worth your time. For an accurate look at the wisdom found in Native American Herbalism, this is an excellent resource.
