Witness: Floyd Vaughn
Location: Cary, Kentucky
Date of Encounter: Summer 1956

My wife, Shell, who passed away in 1996 told me of this encounter she had as a child; Her mother had died of cancer in 1956 leaving behind three daughters of very young age and a husband. The children would play around the grave and wish they could have their mom back with them. My wife had told me that her and her sisters did this ritual daily.

One night when it was just getting dark, Shell told me she had a strong urge to look up the hill toward the cemetery. She saw the image of her mother floating toward her and said she had on a long white flowing gown that was creating a sort of flowing motion toward the bottom. My wife herself being all of nine years was very frightened but she said she was almost too scared to move, but finally she worked up the courage to run when her mother was within forty yards of her. She had managed to run back inside the house screaming and slamming the door. Her father of course knew not what was amiss, threw back open the door and there her mother was, he turned white as a ghost himself and she also told me there was a glow around her mother and her hair seemed to be flowing. The appearance at the door was brief but left my wife's dad very shaken. Shell finally told him the truth how her and her sisters had visited the grave daily and even playing beside it all the time wishing and praying their mom would come back to them. After hearing this, he told Shell, "You and your sisters are disturbing her resting," and not to do this again. They never saw her again.

In a way, I believe this was their mother just letting them know everything is alright, and not to worry because Shell said her mother was smiling all this time. Shell said she wished she could go back and see her appear like that again but she said at that time she was terrified.
