What sets this enjoyable nonfiction paperback apart from so many others, and adds to its educational value, is the manner in which text accompanies unusual photographs. As a gift and as a reference, this is a superb book.

This is the story of amulets in the history of civilization. An accurate discussion of how amulets have been employed as protection against negative forces is given. The idea that all things in the natural world have a spirit and a power linking them together, whether it is a stone, shell, seed, bell, or other item, is explained. Amulets are used to offset and eliminate evil forces.

An example of how the ancient practice of amulets works is seen in this contemporary situation. Astronaut Edward White went to the moon. In the right-hand pocket of his spacesuit, he had a gold cross, a Star of David, and a St. Christopher medallion.

There is even an amulet on the market today in the form of a silver circular pendant that is supposed to protect its wearer from all electromagnetic fields coming from her or his cell telephone! What will they think of next?!

Another very appealing aspect of this fine book is the details from mythology and symbolism. There are more that 400 color photographs.

Sheila Paine is a recognized expert on tribal societies, and textiles. She lives in England and is the author of several books, including The Linen Goddess: Travels from the Red Sea to Prizren.

A well-crafted book, this is one that will educate and entertain. Highly recommended as one of the finest illustrated amulet books in recent years.
