Ghostvillage.com review

A remarkable, erudite look at Ancient Egypt and mysticism, this fine book by Jeremy Naydler will intrigue its many readers with an in-depth analysis of its subject. This is a new reinterpretation of the complex Pyramid Texts, presented in the actual ritual context to which these texts belonged in ancient Egypt.

Part One of the book is about mysticism in ancient Egypt, and the encounter with the sacred which is explained in the introduction. A look at Egyptology and interpretation of ancient Egyptian religion is discussed, touching on the various clash of views. The experience of death, Eleusinian mysteries and other mystery religions, the Osiris myth, Osiris and Horus, and the Sed Festival are among the exciting topics covered.

Part Two covers in detail the shamanic roots of the Pyramid Texts. Material about the Pyramid of Unas is explained. The theme of ancient Egypt and Western Esotericism is presented and explained.

The appendices are of high interest. There is a summary of the utterances in the Pyramid of Unas, and a list of utterances in the five double-chamber pyramids at Saqqara. The lengthy notes are excellent and add to the reading enjoyment of the book.

This is a fine work, one you will enjoy keenly. For the ancient Egypt reader interested in the theme of death in the religion of ancient Egypt, it will be a most welcome book to add to the home library.
