Dear Ghostvillagers,

It’s September and that means back to school, kids. What is it about learning institutions that fosters so many tales of the paranormal? Is it because we’re in an environment that is (hopefully) opening our minds to big questions and possibilities? Is it because we’re among large numbers of peers close to the same age as ourselves and we’re sharing stories, gossiping, and connecting with each other in all kinds of verbal ways? Or are we young and reckless, taking chances that may lead to untimely and sometimes gruesome deaths—leaving a permanent impression on the very fabric of space and time? Likely the answer is all of the above.

I recall my days at Hofstra University in New York. The school has only been around for 75 years (a baby compared with some other institutions), but we still have our stories and legends. There were accidents, suicides, and the students knew where these events occurred. Sometimes we whispered about the kid who fell (or maybe jumped) from the 13th floor back when you could walk out on the terrace there. The fact that the doors were permanently locked now only added to the mystique. Clearly there was a terrace built for people to get fresh air 13 stories up. We know more than one student went over the side, and now we see that the doors can’t be opened anymore. It’s a recipe for a haunting.

This month we’re going to focus on haunted schools, colleges, and universities and the many stories and legends that are born in these locales. Share your own stories, tell us about the events you witnessed, please do get involved.

This month I also have some sad news to report. On September 8th we lost longtime Ghostvillager, Juliet Keller. As a tribute to her, we’re re-running her Ghostvillager profile from 2005. I can’t begin to imagine how many lives Juliet touched when you consider the people she interacted with in her life and online. We’re not talking about changing the whole world, just the slightest influence can make a difference. How many people read something she posted online and gave it some thought? Thank you, Juliet. You will be missed, friend.

Last week I had the opportunity to visit and investigate Mansfield State Reformatory in Ohio with Darkness Radio and the guys from Ghost Adventures (the new season of shows begins tonight on the Travel Channel!). What a great event! (I'd like to publicly apologize to anyone who had to witness Zak, Nick, and myself sing "Bohemian Rhapsody" at karaoke... and to anyone who sat through the video of the debacle on YouTube.) I saw many old friends, made some new ones, and took a bunch of pictures. You can see the images on my Facebook page here. If there’s one lesson I took away from Mansfield, it’s this: Never drop the soap!

The busy fall season is here, people. We get the spotlight for the next month and a half. Whether you realize it or not, you’re now an ambassador to the paranormal. So be nice when someone new visits our village! I have a ton of lectures and events coming up. I hope you’ll come by and say hello at a few of them! I look forward to hanging out with you folks and swapping stories.

Enjoy the rest of the newsletter below!

Supernaturally yours,

Who's Who in the Village?
In the August 2005 Ghostvillage.com Newsletter we profiled Juliet Keller. Sadly, on September 8, 2010, Juliet passed away. She was an active member of our community since 2003. She will be missed. Our deepest condolences go out to her family, her friends, and all of us who have been touched by her in some way. As a tribute, we're running her Ghostvillager profile again. Rest in peace, Juliet. God speed.

Get to know some of your fellow Ghostvillagers.

>>juliet_keller<< - member since January 1, 2003

What is your name?
Juliet Marie Keller

How old are you?
Ugh... 29 + 1

Where do you live?
Wadsworth, Ohio

What do you do for a living?
I'm a State Tested Nursing Assistant, but getting ready for school to be a Licensed Practical Nurse.

How did you get interested in the supernatural?
My aunt was a dream interpreter and got me interested in the paranormal when I was 7 years old. I had been doing investigation on my own for two years until I met Dave and now we have been working as a team called "The Spirit Stalkers" for about a little over two and a half years together doing paranormal investigations. I also still like to delve into Ouija boards and tarot cards as well, from time to time, and I seem to have picked up on my aunt's sense of dream abilities, too.

In your opinion, what is the most critical piece of equipment to bring along in an investigation?
Dave, because he makes me laugh... no, seriously... that's a toughie. Either a 35mm camera with 400 speed film or a regular voice recorder -- either one or the other are just basic pieces of equipment that you can use on any ghost hunts.

Favorite ice cream flavor?
Another toughie... I'm not one for ice cream, but if it would have to be anything, it would have to be just a plain chocolate milk shake.
