Dear Ghostvillagers,

1600 Pennsylvania Avenue may just be one of the most haunted addresses in the world. The White House is not only home to the President and First Family, but also the many ghosts who have been reported throughout the building and the surrounding grounds over the last few centuries. Any of you who have attended my lectures over the years know that this is one of my favorite haunts. And 2008 also marks an election year, which means either Barack Obama or John McCain stand to win the presidency and at least four years of living in a haunted mansion. After years of research, including a trip to Washington, DC, to tour the building and interview some of the staff, I'm proud to announce the imminent release of my new book, Who's Haunting the White House?

This book is full-color, illustrated, and contains many historic photos and many accounts from employees and residents of this amazing building. With so much history, so many important decisions made under that roof, and a myriad of dignitaries visiting, it's no wonder so many ghostly reports have come from the President's mansion. But is it really haunted? Don't take my word for it. To quote President Harry S Truman, "The place is haunted, sure as shootin'." This month we're going to explore the ghosts of the White House a little deeper and discuss the paranormal and children.

Who's Haunting the White House? is aimed at readers ages 9 and up. I'm using ghosts as an innovative way to teach history. It's my first book for the younger market, and I'm hoping you'll support me on this one as you have with my other books in the past. The book will be released in the first week of October, but it's available for pre-order on Amazon.com right now. Be sure to place your order, or reserve your copy at your favorite local bookseller.

And speaking of kids and ghosts... this month I'm also proud to announce the launch of an entirely new section of our Village: http://Kids.Ghostvillage.com! This is a first -- an Internet resource specifically designed for kids, parents, and educators on how to broach the subject of ghosts. The site offers a guide to Junior Ghost Hunters, a section to help parents who may be dealing with a haunting and small children under the same roof, and a section for educators who want to incorporate ghosts in the classroom as a learning tool. I hope you'll take a minute to check out the new Web site and share your own experiences. As with everything on Ghostvillage.com, the Kids' section will grow and expand as we move forward.

It's mid-September, which means the busy Halloween season has already started for us here at Ghostvillage.com. In the coming two months, I'll be offering many lectures and will be a guest on quite a few radio and television shows. If you do see me out and about, please don't be shy. Come over and introduce yourself. I love meeting fellow Ghostvillagers and swapping stories.

One last reminder about the paranormal experiences survey we're hosting for Dr. Barry E. Taff, Jack Rourke, Pat Wheelock, and Dr. Andrew Nichols. If you haven't done so already, please take a minute to take the survey: http://www.ghostvillage.com/psisurvey/survey.php.

Enjoy the rest of the newsletter below!

Supernaturally yours,

Jeff Belanger

It Takes a Village - Charity of the Month
Children International, a top-rated, nonprofit, humanitarian charity, has been providing assistance since 1936 to children and families who are struggling in terrible poverty. They are dedicated to easing the burdens of poverty on poor children and to breaking the cycle of poverty by helping children to achieve healthier habits, better education, better self-esteem, and more opportunities so that they may grow into adults who can realize their full potential.

Today, through the Children International® Sponsorship Program, this organization aids children in 11 countries -- Chile, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, India, Mexico, the Philippines, the United States, and Zambia.

Other ways to help Children International:

1. Sponsor a child. Sponsorship is a very personal way for someone to improve the life of a child in need. Through regular contributions, a sponsor can help provide an impoverished child with necessities such as medical and dental care, education, clothing and shoes, improved living conditions, and more. Regular communication with your sponsored child and Children International helps to build a relationship, and you can experience the benefits of your sponsorship as the child grows. Learn more here.

2. Product donations. Get your company involved by having them donate products, excess inventory, or discontinued items. Children International accepts new products, such as, clothing, shoes, school supplies, pediatric medicines, medical supplies, hygiene items, and household articles. Learn more here.

3. Be an advocate. One of the easiest ways to lend your support is simply by helping spread the word about Children International and its mission. And if you do become a sponsor yourself, take it one step further and participate in the Lift One Project, where you can create a webpage to share the joys of child sponsorship and help recruit more sponsors. Who's Who in the Village?
Get to know some of your fellow Ghostvillagers.

>>AnnieV<< - member since January 9, 2008

What is your name?
Annie Schreiber

How old are you?
27

Where do you live?
Wausau, Wisconsin

What do you do for a living?
Self-employed, small business owner.

What got you interest in the paranormal?
I have been interested in the paranormal for as long as I can remember. Anything mysterious or unknown has always intrigued me. Even as a child, I would have rather read a spooky story about ghosts than one about princesses. I am rather scientific minded, always looking for answers to the "whys" and "hows" of things that happen, especially those things that seem to have no reasonable explanation.

Do you believe children are more prone to having a paranormal experience than adults?
I definitely believe that children are more naturally inclined to experiencing the paranormal, mostly because they have yet to be "taught" the difference between real and imaginary. Part of the process of growing up is learning how to separate truth from fiction, and I have no doubt that somewhere along the way we lose some of the more taboo truths through societal influences and upbringing. In some ways, I suppose we learn to stifle that part of our brain that receives psychic influence and we are thereby less capable of seeing ghosts in our adult years than we were as children.

What was the first scary movie you ever saw?
The first scary movie that I can remember watching was Children of the Corn. I was far too young and shouldn't have been watching a movie like that. I lost a couple nights of sleep.

From the Desk of Christopher Balzano, Ghostvillage.com News Editor:
One of the deeper questions Jeff Belanger’s new book Who's Haunting the White House? asks us is if any president, or someone running for president, can ever devote serious time to the question of ghosts. People in the paranormal community would applaud the move. These same people feel, despite evidence against it, the American public is ready for a leader who would consider the existence of ghosts. After all, don’t most polls say the majority of the country believes in ghosts, and aren’t the scores of paranormal books out there and the popularity of paranormal reality shows a sign the mood of Americans has shifted? The reality is the ghost community may be living in a bubble, too close to the subject to feel the pulse.

Two new reports from the sociology department out of Baylor University paint a different picture of the issue. Later this week Ghostvillage News will offer an in-depth look at the results of these reports focusing on the connection between spirituality, religion, and the belief in ghosts. While not directly addressing the question of increased belief in the supernatural, in a recent interview the authors, Carson Mencken and Christopher Bader, were able to make some generalizations about a shift in acceptance of ghosts.

While conducting the surveys that produced the raw data they used, they found they still needed to phrase the questions in a broad way and that the average person still cannot make subtle distinctions when it comes to paranormal topics. Their results show there is no trend upward in ghostly belief over the past years. While more people may be open to the idea, it reveals more about general open-mindedness than genuine belief. Believing in ghosts still lies outside the lines of the norm, and until it becomes mainstream it will not be an acceptable alternative for spiritual people.

The windfall of media outlets selling us ghosts may make us feel paranormal ideas are becoming mainstream, but the media is designed to make us feel accepted, or that buying a product will give us the acceptance we crave. According to Dr. Mencken, “I remember there always being supernatural shows on television. There are more shows on, but we also have more channels now. Has the percentage grown?” Reality has replaced drama on television, so true ghost stories are reflections of that trend and not a new dawn for true believers.

Americans will have to wait and see if the media blitz has a lasting effect on the general public.
