Dear Ghostvillagers,

You can't study ghosts without also taking a close look at history. There seem to be few rules as to how hauntings work and where the supernatural can be found, but we do see trends, and we do know hotspots. Wherever history, especially tragic history, left its mark, ghosts seem to follow. If this holds true (and I think it does given the evidence), then historic battlefields are among the world's most haunted locales.

This month I'm proud to announce the arrival of my new book, Ghosts of War: Restless Spirits of Soldiers, Spies, and Saboteurs. This is a closer look at history than I've done with my previous books.

In researching and writing Ghosts of War, I was somewhat surprised at how some people found the notion of haunted battle sites as dishonorable. Nothing could be further from the truth! First, it's possible there are no tortured or discarnate souls wandering these battle grounds at all. In many instances, the hauntings seem to be residual -- meaning such a powerful event took place that it left a permanent mark on the area, and for some reason some people are able to pick up on it. In other cases, these ghosts of soldiers seem bound by duty to keep their watch -- ensuring the safety of their fort, their comrades, and their country. No matter the cause of the restless spirits, the effect is that we are forced to look back into history and understand why these men and women fought and died. Sometimes we can even figure out who these ghosts were in life -- taking them out of some cold statistical category and giving them a name, a place of birth, family, friends, and a story that comes with each human being. Paranormal investigating is always important work, but when it comes to exploring spirits of history, the work almost becomes sacred.

Mid-September not only marks the launch of my new book, it also marks the beginning of the busy Halloween season and my schedule is filling fast. Over the next two months I'll be speaking at conferences and meetings in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Washington, Oregon, and California (you can see my complete schedule below) and doing dozens of radio interviews all over the world. If you have the opportunity to visit any of these wonderful productions, please do introduce yourself -- it's always an honor to meet my fellow Ghostvillagers.

This month's theme at Ghostvillage.com is... you guessed it... Ghosts of War. For our feature article I explore why war re-enactors seem to have an unusually high number of ghost experiences. This month we're also going to explore the battle sites, the haunted ships, and the accounts of people who have come face-to-face with the spirits of soldiers. Thank you to all of you who have been buying my books and supporting my work. By discussing this topic, we're furthering a very important discussion and affecting some change in the overall perception of this phenomenon. I'm proud to be doing the work with you. Enjoy the rest of the newsletter below.

Supernaturally yours,

Jeff Belanger

Who's Who in the Town Square?
Get to know some of your fellow Ghostvillagers.

>>Morbid<< - member since July 12, 2006

What is your name?
Dani

How old are you?
I'm 20 years old.

Where do you live?
Mount Carmel, Pennsylvania

What do you do for a living?
At the moment I deliver newspapers, but working for better.

What got you interested in the supernatural?
My interest in the supernatural came when I was really young. My friends and I liked to scare each other with ghost stories, and one night we sat around telling stories and someone freaked us out by screaming in the middle of it. We laughed after they screamed but looking at them we realized they were actually in fear and said they'd seen someone outside. Well we ran to look and no one was there. Then we were told by her parents that we were angering the spirits and to stop telling stories. Now I don't believe that's what we were doing, but that was the first trigger. And yes, I see them from time to time, but for the most part I can only sense them.

Do you think proof of the existence of ghosts is possible?
I think eventually we'll have a way to really prove things. To me, I've had enough proof with people's videos, pictures, EVP, and my own personal experience that I don't question their existence anymore.

What was your favorite cartoon growing up?
Favorite cartoon, geez... Probably I'd say either Rocko's Modern Life, Ahhhh! Real Monsters, or Dexter's Laboratory.
