Dear Ghostvillagers,

It's October... and that means our village is hoppin'! It's Halloween... it's Samhain... ghosts have center stage, not just in our lives, but in mainstream media as well. It's an opportunity to further the ghostly discussion, to increase awareness about who we are and what we do, and to have a little fun.

When I was growing up, Halloween meant monsters and ghosts were free to roam the streets, it meant chillier days were coming, but above all, it meant candy. My family was fortunate enough to live in a neighborhood where two or three hours of trick-or-treating could yield a pillowcase full of the sweet stuff, which my sister and I would spill out onto the floor so our mother could inspect when the night was through. This was the mid-eighties, the earlier days of worries about candy tampering, and so each wrapper was checked by Chief Inspector Mom before we could gorge ourselves into a sugar-induced coma.

My father simply sat back during the inspection process. Mom's Halloween lesson was not to trust anyone... Dad's lesson came after the inspection was complete: charity. My father suggested that my sister and I each take half of our candy to donate to the poor kids who lived in the town where my dad worked. My sister and I reluctantly agreed to help these underprivileged youths who were so poor they couldn't go begging for candy door-to-door like my sister and I did.

This was an annual ritual in my family that came to an abrupt halt when I was about twelve years old. I remember visiting my dad in his office in early November one year, and I noticed that his bottom desk drawer was open slightly. Many colorful objects inside caught my eye, and I looked down to discover our "charity" candy. My dad then taught me another valuable lesson -- some charities have huge overhead and only a small portion of the donations actually make it to the actual needy. In the case of my father's candy charity, his overhead was 100%. I can almost promise you that one day when my daughter is a little older and comes home with more candy than a Willy Wonka factory, I will most certainly pull this same scam on her.

So Halloween 2007 is upon us, and I'm experiencing my busiest busy season ever. It's been great to meet so many people at lectures and conferences who are curious about the haunts, to talk with so many media outlets about the subject, and to see all the attention we're getting around the world. This month I'm inviting you all to share your own memories of Halloween. We want to hear your feelings and ideas on this "Day of the Dead." Also keep your eyes glued to Ghostvillage.com each day leading up to October 31st. We have a lot of great content that will be coming online, plus on the 31st, our ghost hosts with the most, Ron Kolek and Maureen Wood, will be hosting a three-continent video and audio investigation and broadcast. You'll be able to see and hear it all from our site. You can check out all the activity at: http://www.ghostvillage.com/halloween.

Have a great October, and enjoy the rest of the newsletter below.

Supernaturally yours,

Jeff Belanger
Mayor of Ghostvillage.com

Who's Who in the Village?
Get to know some of your fellow Ghostvillagers.

>>randystreu<< - member since January 14, 2004

What is your name?
Randy Streu

How old are you?
29

Where do you live?
Deep in the heart of Northern New York.

What do you do for a living?
I'm a radio DJ, studying for the ministry.

What got you interested in the paranormal?
Okay, this is a tough one. I've always had a passing interest in the paranormal -- by which I mean everything abnormal: cryptozoology, hauntings, aliens/UFOs, etc. This interest was solidified by an event in my near-adulthood, just before going to college, in which I was physically attacked by unseen forces (which today I believe to have been demonic in nature). You know, that stuff never sounds as crazy until you write it all out...

Do you think paranormal activity is on the rise worldwide?
I think it's possible. Or perhaps, thanks to the technology we have now, and a better understanding of the natural world, we are simply better at noticing when things are amiss. I think, too, people are so thirsty for meaning that there is a greater recognition (than in the recent past) that this physical world simply isn't all there is. This recognition then leads to a quest for understanding of what, exactly, is out there. This heightened overall interest could be responsible, either for an illusion of more paranormal activity, or, perhaps, because of this increased awareness, paranormal activity really is on the rise in response.

Do you have any special Halloween traditions?
I didn't have any. Except that I enjoy watching 3-4 horror movies on Halloween (Don't we all?). Now that I have kids, of course, we take them trick-or-treating. We shall see what the future brings.
