Dear Ghostvillagers,

Seven years ago Ghostvillage.com was born. We launched back in 1999 with just six little Web pages, but we had big dreams. We asked you to share your experiences, evidence, and research, and you answered the call... in a very big way. Today we're the largest supernatural resource on the Internet, and we are a big voice in furthering the discussion of this important subject.

This month I'm proud to announce the next step in our growth -- the launch of Ghostvillage Radio -- a weekly podcast that will feature interviews with some of the biggest names in supernatural research, recaps of the week's paranormal news, and correspondents from around the world. The Ghost Chronicles show is being hosted by seasoned radio hosts and ghost researchers Ron Kolek and Maureen Wood. Watch for the first show in our features section on Monday, October 23rd.

It's Halloween/Samhain time again, which means the spotlight is on us. For this month's feature articles I asked some of the many researchers who have graced our pages over the years to share what Halloween/Samhain means to them. I'm grateful that so many of my friends and colleagues replied. You can read all about it here. And you can share your own thoughts on the subject in our message board of the month.

For me, Halloween has always been a special time -- a time for casting spells, for exploring the unknown, and dancing with the dead at a time when the veil between the two worlds is at its thinnest. As a kid, my first priority was always candy. I recall putting in many hours of trick-or-treating with my friends, almost filling our pillowcases with sugary treats. When I got home, my parents would sort through the candy with us looking for anything that may have been tampered with, and my dad would suggest to my sister and I that we set aside half of our candy as a donation to the poor kids in Bridgeport, Connecticut (the town he worked in). Each year my sister and I gave begrudgingly to this charity. Looking back, I can see that this lesson taught us the importance of charity... but the lesson doesn't quite end here.

One year, shortly after Halloween I was visiting my dad in his office in Bridgeport. His bottom desk drawer was slightly open -- open just enough for me to look in and see the myriad of colorful candy wrappers from our Halloween booty. "Poor kids in Bridgeport?" I asked my father. He just smiled, thus completing a second lesson about charities -- some charities have an extremely high operations expense-to-donation ratio. In my dad's case, his ratio was 100% operating expense to zero. Looking back, I'm sure the savings in dental bills and the minimizing of our sugar intake was well worth the deception.

The veil is thin, the supernatural discussion is happening everywhere right now, and we're all learning more about our own sense of spirituality and how the world around us works. Thank you for seven amazing years, and hold on to your pointed hats, because our best days still lay ahead. Happy Halloween! Happy Samhain! Enjoy the rest of the newsletter below.

Supernaturally yours,

Jeff Belanger

Congratulations to Barbara Walsh of Dedham, Massachusetts, who was last month's winner of a copy of an autographed copy of Jeff Belanger's new book, Ghosts of War: Restless Spirits of Soldiers, Spies, and Saboteurs, a Ghostvillage.com window sticker, and a Ghostvillage.com t-shirt!

This month, we're doing the contest again, but we ask that you first click this link: http://www.ghostvillage.com/index.shtml#winner. If it says, "The search is on" then we don't have a winner yet and go ahead and send in your answer. If you see today's date and "We have a winner!" that means you weren't the first to email us. Sorry, please try again next month.

On to this month's question: This question can be answered by reading a page on Ghostvillage.com. The first person to reply to this email with the correct answer will win this month's prize.

Why is Halloween Richard Senate's favorite holiday?

Once we have our winner, we will announce them on our home page as soon as possible. Good luck! (Only Ghostvillagers who have not won a prize from us in the last year are eligible.)

This month's prize: As a Halloween special, we're giving away an autographed choice from Jeff Belanger's library. The winner can choose from: The World's Most Haunted Places, Communicating With the Dead, Encyclopedia of Haunted Places, The Nightmare Encyclopedia, Our Haunted Lives, or Ghosts of War, a Ghostvillage.com window sticker, and a Ghostvillage.com t-shirt!

Three Questions for Brad Steiger
Earlier this year I received quite an honor. Brad Steiger was kind enough to review my book, Our Haunted Lives and provide a blurb for the back cover. A few months later, I experienced an even greater honor... Brad asked me to review one of his new books and write a blurb for his back cover. Strange Guests was the book, and here is what I had to say about it:

"Strange Guests will force you to completely rethink the poltergeist phenomenon. Brad Steiger explores both legendary and obscure ghost cases from around the world as only he can. His gripping narrative style takes readers inside the haunts and explores the poltergeist activity from the perspective of the witnesses who (mostly) lived through it. Throughout the history of paranormal research, there are very few who can match the credibility and reputation of Brad Steiger." – Jeff Belanger, Founder of Ghostvillage.com and author of The World's Most Haunted Places

As a Ghostvillage.com Newsletter exclusive, I sat down with Brad for a three-question interview about the book. Here's what Brad had to say:

1.) Have you ever participated in a three-question interview before?
No, but I'm not surprised that you would come up with such an idea.

2.) Your book, Strange Guests (originally published in 1966) has recently been re-released by Anomalist Books. Has the study of the poltergeist phenomenon changed much in the last 40 years?
Remarkably not. As you and others who have the opportunity to read the book know, the accounts and research that I present in the book are as valid and timely today as they were when I wrote the book in 1966. Although Ivan T. Sanderson, my mentor on the project, believed that the poltergeist, the noisy, throwing ghost, was the most likely of all psychic phenomena to be able to be proven to the skeptics and the most likely to be physically demonstrated to science, not much has been accomplished. Bill Roll has accumulated the most solid evidence, but conventional scientists haven't rolled over {no pun intended} in their acceptance.

3.) Now that your three question interview is over, how do you think it went?
Marvelously well. Sharing quickly, a radio host who will interview me later this week called to say that one night he simply had to put the book down until morning because he found the material too spooky to read late at night. How's that for a great review?

Do you have a question for someone in the paranormal community? Email us, and we'll post your question and the response here next month.

>>sheal<< - member since June 28, 2006

What is your name?
Shealaina (shu-lay-nuh) is my name. I use Sheal as a shortened version that is easier for others to remember and pronounce (nickname is pronounced "shell").

How old are you?
I am 27.

Where do you live?
Ontario, Canada but I was born and raised in Montreal, Quebec.

What do you do for a living?
I am both a stay-at-home mom and Web developer/graphics designer. I am also the founder of Save The Children Network, a non-profit organization that pushes legislative issues of stricter child pornography laws and sentencing.

Who is that cute critter in the photo with you?
That little diva-ish critter is my daughter, Bri. Can you believe, I was 7 months pregnant in that photo with my youngest son!

Have you ever seen a ghost? If so, what happened?
Yes, I have. I've seen them and heard them. I've had my hair pulled, I've been pinched, hit, burned (friction burn), screamed at, whispered to, and much more. The first time I saw a ghost was when I was living in a haunted house we were renting. We only lived there for 7 months due to the hauntings. I was alone, my children (at the time only the three, I have four now) were asleep and I was watching television. I happened to look up and saw her standing in front of my coat rack (you could see through her as well) and she was staring at me and pointing at me. She had an ankle-length nightie on, long (down to her knees at least) blond hair and sharp, icy blue eyes. All she did was point at me. After a little bit she disappeared right in front of my eyes.

Do you think your family and friends are more or less open to discussing the supernatural than they were a few years ago?
They are somewhat open. Some are not open about it and are skeptics, but I do believe my husband is very much more open about it now than he was years ago. He has this saying, "I live with a human psychic portal for ghosts, nothing really fazes me anymore."

What does Halloween/Samhain mean to you?
We are the real-live human version of the Connors from the Roseanne show. We dress up, decorate the house with fog lights, black lights, scary decorations, even a big hand-made coffin we built one year. We love Halloween. We've even had a family member gerry-rigged in a maple tree just hanging there like a hanging victim. Samhain is more of a personal thing for myself. I am the only Pagan in the family other than one of my husband's cousins. It's a time of reflection, thankfulness, and solitude.
