Dear Ghostvillagers,

The Halloween season must be here because I just heard Bobby "Boris" Pickett's perennial song, "Monster Mash" play on the radio. It must be Halloween because Ghostvillage has donned our new look and we have been hopping with new and old visitors wandering our streets and dark back alleys. And it must be Halloween because ghostly discussions are happening on radio and television programs, and the oversized ghosts and jack-o-lantern decorations that adorn our neighbors' lawns remind us that the supernatural is not a taboo subject -- at least not this month.

This has been an incredible October for me already. I've had the pleasure of meeting many Ghostvillagers at some of the various lectures and events I've spoken at, and I was fortunate enough to attend the Las Vegas Paranormal Conference which was put on by Robert Allen and Janice Oberding. I'm a big fan of conferences like these because it gives us the opportunity to come together and talk about the way we go about our studies of the supernatural, we get to learn from each other, and we make some great contacts, which gives us the chance to work together on investigations and other important projects in the field. One of the highlights of the Las Vegas conference was visiting Liberace's haunted mansion -- you can read a write-up of the experience by author Richard Senate here.

Last month I told you about a charity auction we were hosting for Hurricane Katrina victims -- I'm proud to share the results with you this month. We raised $723.90 for the American Red Cross! A big thank-you to everyone who donated and bid on the auction items. Great things happen when the paranormal community comes together.

The spotlight is on us through October 31st -- let's take every opportunity to raise awareness and get people openly talking about ghosts and hauntings... and if you happen to be trick-or-treating in my neighborhood this year, we give out the full-sized candy bars. You can't miss my house -- it's the one with the fog machines and strobe lights going, and in the background you'll no doubt hear the sounds of Bobby "Boris" Pickett... "We did the mash... we did the Monster Mash... it's a graveyard smash..."

Supernaturally yours,

Jeff Belanger

Monthly Contest
Congratulations to Andi Kiger of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, who was last month's winner of an autographed copy of Jeff Belanger's new book, The Encyclopedia of Haunted Places: Ghostly Locales from Around the World, a Ghostvillage.com window sticker, and a Ghostvillage.com t-shirt!

This month, we're doing the contest again, but we ask that you first click this link: http://www.ghostvillage.com/index.shtml#winner. If it says, "The search is on" then we don't have a winner yet and go ahead and send in your answer. If you see today's date and "We have a winner!" that means you weren't the first to email us. Sorry, please try again next month.

On to this month's question: This question can be answered by reading a page on Ghostvillage.com. The first person to reply to this email with the correct answer will win this month's prize.

What year was Liberace born in and what is his full name?

Once we have a winner, we will announce it on our home page as soon as possible. Good luck! (Only Ghostvillagers who have not won a prize from us in the last year are eligible.)

This month's prize: We're giving away an autographed copy of Jeff Belanger's new book, The Encyclopedia of Haunted Places: Ghostly Locales from Around the World, a Ghostvillage.com window sticker, and a Ghostvillage.com t-shirt!

Who's Who in the Town Square?
Get to know some of your fellow Ghostvillagers.

>>dchastain<< - member since November 17, 2004

What is your name?
Chastain... David Chastain

How old are you?
I turned 37 on October 8th.

Where do you live?
Woodstock, Georgia

What do you do for a living?
I work as a Technical Integration Manager in Information Technology Operations for an Atlanta-based media and auto industry conglomerate.

What got you interested in the supernatural?
I think it must be the birthday. October has always been my favorite month, and Halloween trails my birthday. So as a child while I was getting hyped to turn a year older, there were always trappings of Halloween celebration around. It probably worked into my psyche. I spent a great deal of my time as a pre-teenager in the public library year-round reading anything that I could get my hands on of paranormal orientation. I used to secretly sit up after my parents went to bed and watch movies like George Romero's Night of the Living Dead. I placed in two Halloween costume contests during that same time period. Then I continued to grow up during the slasher horror film/Fangoria era. I slid right into Stephen King, Peter Straub, Anne Rice, etc.

There was an old primitive church near Berry College where I grew up in Rome, Georgia. Whenever I could, I would visit the church because of the predictable stories of secret devil worship, sacrifices, graveyard activity. The best part was that you could not drive all the way up to the church. In the time before I was fully considerate of private property owners, we would park at the gate day or night and hike up to the church... and proceed to scare the wits out of each other. I was there once during the day and found a partly-exposed grave. I imagined all of the horrific reasons that this could be possible. That church was probably the "nail in the coffin."

What's your favorite paranormal movie?
It changes, but currently it is Session 9 released in 2001, starring David Caruso and Stephen Gevedon, directed by Brad Anderson. I just watched it again a couple of days ago. Brrrrrr.

What's the first music album you ever bought?
I wish I could declare it was something deep and artistic, but it was in fact a K-Tel cassette compilation of early 80's popular music. On it was the Go-Go's, Joe Jackson, Flock of Seagulls, etc. I played it all of the time on a crappy little black desktop tape recorder and it drove my parents crazy.
