Dear Ghostvillagers,

Wow... we survived another busy Halloween/Samhain season. I'd like to say hello to the many great people I had the chance to meet over the last month. Thank you to those who came to hear me speak at my lectures or conferences, and welcome to all of you folks who found us for the first time because of the spirited holiday that gives us the spotlight once a year. Welcome to the discussion, one and all.

When it comes to spirituality, we have a natural sense of egocentrism that overcomes us. Our way must be the right way, after all, it's (usually) the way our parents taught us, and their parents before them. The spirituality of other people, especially people from long ago, seems weird to pretty much everyone outside of that system. Dancing around a fire, mixing herbs, or chanting for hours doesn't make much sense unless you've been engrained in that culture and know the meaning behind each step, each ingredient, and each note.

For many modern folks, spirituality comes through an organized religion or belief system. But don't be confused -- spirituality and religion are two separate topics (though it's difficult to discuss one without the other). This month we're going to discuss native spirituality on Ghostvillage.com. We'll explore how indigenous peoples made a connection with the physical world around them, as well as the spiritual world, because perhaps those two worlds are more intertwined than we realize. We'll discuss spirit contact, ghostly legends from pre-history, and examine that ghost hunter's cliché: "the building was constructed on a former Indian burial ground."

This past month we not only saw many new faces come through our Village, we finally made some room for our younger viewers. Watch for new content for kids, parents, and educators coming online constantly at: http://kids.ghostvillage.com.

Enjoy the rest of the newsletter below!

Supernaturally yours,

Jeff Belanger
Mayor of Ghostvillage.com

It Takes a Village - Charity of the Month
November is a month for giving thanks for the things we are blessed to have in our lives. It is also a time to reflect on those who may not have as much, and a time to do what we can to help fight hunger and poverty in the U.S. and around the world.

World Hunger Year (WHY) was founded in 1975 to work toward long-term solutions to global hunger and poverty. WHY supports community-based, grassroots organizations that empower individuals and build self-reliance by offering job training, education and after school programs; increasing access to housing and healthcare; providing microcredit and entrepreneurial opportunities; teaching people to grow their own food; and assisting small farmers. WHY connects these organizations to funders, media, and legislators.

“At WHY, we envision a world without hunger and poverty. If we can shift the prevailing viewpoint on why hunger and poverty exist, then we can influence the policymakers and put an end to this human tragedy.”

To donate money online, click here

Other ways to help WHY:

1. Educate yourself and take a stand. Read WHY’s publications on topics such as food security, free trade, and global water crises. Then write to your local newspaper or your elected officials and make your voice heard. Learn more here

2. Give your time. Locate volunteer opportunities in your area. Whether you are looking for food assistance, volunteer opportunities, places to donate food, or other information from programs in your area that are working to fight hunger and poverty, WHY’s online search directory can help you get started. Search for opportunities in your area here

3. Involve children. Empower the kids in your life. They can make a difference toward ending world hunger and poverty, too. Educate them on the root causes and let them know they can help by creating fundraisers, writing letters, and volunteering locally. Learn more here

Who's Who in the Village?
Get to know some of your fellow Ghostvillagers.

>>Laurie Ann<< - member since May 12, 2006

What is your name?
Laurie Bowers

How old are you?
38

Where do you live?
I live in LaPorte, Indiana.

What do you do for a living?
Besides raising three beautiful children and taking care of an ill husband, I work full time in a hardware store as a housewares associate and merchandising.

What got you interested in the paranormal?
I've been interested since I was young, then it heightened when my husband and I bought our home three years ago and activity was present. Our home was built in 1880, so there's much history here.

Do you feel native peoples of the world have a more spiritual connection to the world around them?
Myself being part Native American (Blackfoot), I wish I could say "yes," but I honestly feel that it's all in the person themself.

What's your favorite TV series?
I have a few that I enjoy... depends on my mood. My all-time favorite is M*A*S*H, but I also like The Ghost Whisperer and Medium.

News
This is the place to find news items on paranormal happenings around the world. If you have a news item you'd like to submit, please see our guidelines.

From the Desk of Christopher Balzano, Ghostvillage.com News Editor:
It’s the moment real progress can be made. You can spend your time preaching to the choir or shouting at a stone wall until you are blue in the face, but the good work gets done at that intersection of the open mind and a moment of truth. Paranormal investigators are waiting for the perfect piece of evidence to change people’s minds about ghosts, but the biggest leaps forward will take place when the unbiased voice allows the potential for an extraordinary event to have a mysterious foundation. This month there have been two.

During the build-up to Halloween, local news sources flooded the Web with reports from their towns. There were paranormal events and speakers, haunted tours and investigations, and profiles of local investigators out there in the field trying to look into local haunted locations. It’s pretty much the same every year, and most of the reports were carbon copies of clichés. Maybe it was the influence of the holiday, but shortly after October 31 there were two that spoke of ghosts as the source of tragedy.

The first appeared in the Western Morning News out of the UK. A seemingly stable young woman named Carrisa Glenn committed suicide in her flat while sleepwalking. The report is disturbing enough, especially given the report Ghostvillage will be providing later this month on the groundbreaking new documentary on night terrors. What makes the story stick out is that the young lady may have been under the influence of the spirit of someone who had killed themselves in the same apartment in the same way. Although the earlier death is said to be untrue, Glenn had become obsessed with the ghost and complained it was communicating to her.

The second is also from the UK, this time out of Port Elizabeth from the Weekend Post. There a local video store was burnt to the ground, possibly due to a turf war in the area. The story is nothing more than an account of the blaze and some theories as to the why and how, but for a brief moment the writer goes back to a similar fire up the street in 2001. In that case, an independent investigator and the deputy director of the fire department attributed the flames to the work of poltergeist activity. These were two professionals with much to lose who made the assessment after a thorough examination of all of the facts.

These may not be the kind of groundbreaking news stories that turn the paranormal community on its head, but they may be more important than many of the ghostly pictures and videos that find their way to the national media. Those stories are sensational. These two are quiet examples of that intersection moment. They hardly stand up as evidence, but evidence is not the only thing that can make a mind change. Sometimes the best argument is made when a nonbeliever shrugs his shoulders and admits a maybe.
