Dear Ghostvillagers,

I’d first heard about dowsing as a child. One of my friends had a grandfather who could dowse for water using a forked stick. He used to work for the water company and was so matter-of-fact about his “gift” that I didn’t get the impression that this was any gift at all. To this old-timer, dowsing was a simple fact – you walk around with a forked stick and you’ll feel the stick pull down when you’re over water. He claimed to find underground water pipes when he and his crew had to make repairs and replacements, wells, and any other water source that needed finding. To this man, it was a matter of paying attention – nothing supernatural at all.

Once I started researching the history of dowsing, I learned that people have found a lot more than just water. The technique also has been used to find metals, lost objects, people, animals, buried treasure, precious gems, oil, and spirit energies. This month we're going to delve into dowsing on Ghostvillage.com. Whether using a forked stick, coat hanger, L-shaped metal rods, or pendulums, dowsers have the ability to "tune in" to what they want to find.

Also called “divining” and even “witching,” these rods and techniques are certainly a part of divination. The idea goes back millennia and there are even references to water dowsing in the Bible in the chapter Exodus when Moses leads his people to a rock that gives forth vital drinking water.

Dowsers will tell you that there's no magic in the rods, pendulum, or stick. The ability is in the person, and these tools simply help point to what we already know inside of ourselves. We simply have to listen sometimes.

It's been a great month in the Village. We've had a lot of new members join our message boards, more people than ever before are sharing their experiences, and each day we move a little closer to a better understanding of ourselves and the world around us. It's an honor to be on this adventure with all of you.

Supernaturally yours,

Jeff Belanger

Once we have our winner, we will announce them on our home page as soon as possible. Good luck! (Only Ghostvillagers who have not won a prize from us in the last year are eligible.)

Who's Who in the Village?
Get to know some of your fellow Ghostvillagers.

>>Shawn333<< - member since October 13, 2005

What is your name?
Shawn Patrick

How old are you?
32

Where do you live?
Cincinnati, Ohio (Go Bengals!)

What do you do for a living?
I work at a packaging plant and also teach martial arts classes. I teach a traditional style called Kenpo and a modern mixed martial art called shootfighting, which mixes elements from western boxing and wrestling with Muay Thai and Jiu-Jitsu.

What got you interested in the paranormal?
I've always been interested in anything unknown and mysterious since I was a kid. I loved hearing about ghost stories, Big Foot, UFOs, the Loch Ness Monster, and other similar things. I think recently my interest in the paranormal has more to do with spirituality and the search for truth. I like to study world religions and belief systems. There are so many questions about the nature of reality and life after death.

Do you believe dowsing can be used in spirit communication?
Dowsing is not something that I have a firm belief in, but I certainly wouldn't rule it out either. I tend to have an open mind about things. I would rather use a psychic that I know and trust or try to capture EVPs for spirit communication.

What's your favorite ice cream flavor?
Moose tracks.
