Dear Ghostvillagers,

It may only be the middle of July, and carved jack-o-lanterns, candy corn, and ghost stories may seem a long way off, but in reality, the Halloween season is starting soon. Though we’re interested in the subject year-round, the media is going to start paying attention again as they search for local ghostly legends and people to trot out into the public eye for a few precious weeks. Ghost investigators, authors, and mediums all become subjects (and fodder) for the local and national media. For those of us who are passionate about the subject, it’s an opportunity to speak intelligently about the paranormal and maybe get a few people thinking a little bigger.

As someone who watches media coverage of the paranormal on a global scale, I can tell you I may get physically sick if I see one more newspaper headline about a ghost investigation group that reads: “Who Ya Gonna Call?” Cliché, yes. But it still makes a point. As I read these articles I hope and pray that the people being interviewed have some insight to share, that they come across as articulate, because these investigators represent all of us whether they realize it or not. The spotlight is a good thing. Our time to shine is coming up soon, and we need to be ready and have something to say. If you do get the call from your local TV reporter to show them a regional haunt, remember, just say NO when they ask you to don a white sheet and run screaming through an old hallway. This month we’re going to explore media coverage of the paranormal and look at media perceptions of who we are and what we do.

Speaking of media, my new show 30 Odd Minutes has filmed three new episodes since our last newsletter. We spoke to cryptozoologist Don Keating about the Ohio Grassman; Mark and Debby Constantino about EVP; and psychic Tiffany Johnson about Developing Your Psychic Ability. Thanks for all of the great feedback so far. Be sure to check us out often, we’re always adding new shows!

There are still a few tickets left for some upcoming paranormal dinners and lectures this month. Join me for the "Weird and Haunted Travels" lecture and dinner July 18th in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, and "Dining With the Dead" on July 27th in Windham, New Hampshire.

Enjoy the rest of the newsletter below!

Supernaturally yours,

Jeff Belanger

Who's Who in the Village?
Get to know some of your fellow Ghostvillagers.

>>Laurie Ann<< - member since May 12, 2006

What is your name?
Laurie Ann

How old are you?
39 this August, but mentally I'm 20-ish.

Where do you live?
Laporte, Indiana

What do you do for a living?
Right now, I'm taking care of my ill husband and our 2 young children. When I go back to work once my husband gets some answers to his illness, I'll be going back to work at the hospital.

What got you interested in the paranormal?
I wasn't into the paranormal until I was around 14 or 15 when I was laying in bed and actually saw my deceased Grandma laying right next to me...I realized then and there that if you're scared enough you can actually "fly" down the stairs. My interest was piqued again until we bought our home 4 years ago and things started moving by themselves... magnets flew off the fridge, voices, footsteps... too many to mention.

Do you believe we all have psychic abilities to some extent?
We sure do. What we need to do is try to figure out what part of our brain controls this ability and exercise it, just like you would muscles. We're all born with an ability, a gift.

What's your all-time favorite summer song?
"Do You Remember?" by Michael Jackson.

News
This is the place to find news items on paranormal happenings around the world. If you have a news item you'd like to submit, please see our guidelines.

From the Desk of Christopher Balzano, News Editor
Some ghosts just seem to be obsessed with letting themselves be seen. Paranormal investigators spend their time searching high and low with their cameras and video recorders, but the ghosts prefer to walk around places where they can be seen on security cameras by people who are not looking and who hardly know what they saw afterwards. If the watched pot never boils, the news has shown us the past few months that it may be because it’s overflowing over the fire in the kettle.

Since the beginning of the year, ghosts have been seen in a fitness center, a hospital, a funeral home, the set of a reality show, and a school. One of the best came out last week when Michael Jackson made an appearance on the Larry King Live show without being alive. They often are found as video on legitimate newscasts from across the country or in papers not known for being supporters of the paranormal. The problem with the images is that they contribute to the “boy who cried ghost” factor but they do make things interesting.

These stories come over the newswire and are picked up by the normal newscasts. They make for a perfect story because they are quick, are never followed up on, promote the place that found them, and are quickly moved away from. They appeal to people’s belief in the paranormal and drift away, keeping the paranormal in people’s mind without taking it too seriously. If nothing else, their popularity tells us the public is still clamoring for ghost pictures.

Keep your eyes on the news this month. These is almost a guarantee someone watching the security camera at a parking garage is going to see something. We cannot say the figure is definitely a ghost, but we will offer you the video to judge for yourself.
