Dear Ghostvillagers,

The other day I was hiking through the woods behind my house. I've been working too much lately so I thought it would be good to clear my head. As I turned down a trail I've hiked many times in the past, I suddenly saw Elvis, Bigfoot, and the Loch Ness Monster square dancing with each other in the woods.

What? You don't believe me? That's good. You shouldn't. It never happened. We shouldn't believe everything we hear about or read. We should all be a little skeptical. Let's review the Dictionary.com definition of "skeptic": "a person who questions the validity or authenticity of something purporting to be factual." Fair enough. If someone makes a supernatural claim, we should look into it and see if the facts shake out. What we shouldn't do is go into the situation with a pre-conceived notion that there is no such thing as a ghost, therefore I will go in and not find any facts leading to that conclusion. That attitude is just as wrong as going into a situation believing that there are such things as ghosts, and I'm going to immediately believe that the scurrying I'm hearing in the attic must be a ghost and not some squirrel that snuck in. Neither of those scenarios is science.

Skeptics bring a lot to the table in regard to discussion of the supernatural. Sometimes the answer is obvious, but sometimes it is not. One of the problems with some folks in the skeptic movement is that they aren't skeptics at all; they're atheists who are subscribing to a rigid belief system. One of the other downfalls of skepticism is to hide behind the guise of science. An argument I've heard many times is that ghosts can't exist because it would go against the laws of physics. The problem with this argument is that it assumes that science currently knows all there is to know about physics. New developments in science negate knowledge we used to take as fact all of the time. True science is exploring the universe with an open mind and seeing what happens. This month we're going to explore skepticism a little deeper on Ghostvillage.com. We'll look at the contributions skeptics have made to the field of paranormal research (and there truly are many), we'll examine the pitfalls of preconceived notions, and we'll hear from some of the loudest skeptic voices.

July is in full swing and there is much going on this summer. I've had the pleasure to be getting around to a few conferences lately. I'd like to say thank you to Troy Taylor and the American Ghost Society for having me out to their huge event at the Lincoln Theater in Decatur, Illinois, last month. And I'd also like to say thank you to all of the Ghostvillagers who are planning to attend the Ghost World Conference in Gettysburg this coming weekend. I'm looking forward to meeting with all of you! Enjoy the rest of the newsletter below.

Supernaturally yours,

Jeff Belanger
Mayor of Ghostvillage.com

Who's Who in the Village?
Get to know some of your fellow Ghostvillagers.

>>Vivienne_DuBois<< - member since February 8, 2006

What is your name?
Amanda

How old are you?
25

Where do you live?
Near Madison, Wisconsin

What do you do for a living?
I’m a writer of poetry and novels. To support myself, I work with antiques.

What first got you interested in ghosts and the supernatural?
When I was a child, I started “seeing” things as they looked in the past. I’m still unsure about how this happens or why or if it even is real. However, those experiences, along with being able to seemingly communicate with and be contacted by spirits, really got me interested in learning more about why these things happen to people and the supernatural, in general.

What is the most compelling piece of ghost evidence you have seen?
I think for most people, the most compelling evidence they have seen is what they experience with their own senses. The same is true for me. To be more specific, I would have to say the experiences I’ve had with my Uncle’s spirit have been the most heartfelt and eye-opening for me.

What is your favorite summer treat?
Chilled carrot cake.
