Dear Ghostvillagers,

I was raised Catholic, so I was taught from a young age that Witches were something to be avoided. That to mess with witchcraft was to gamble with your very soul. The underlying message from the nuns and priests, of course, was that; A. this stuff really works; and B. it's not our ways, so don't do it.

The message that it really worked was very intriguing to me. I asked if there was a Catholic equivalent to this kind of thing. It turns out, there is (but it would take me many years to figure it out).

When I started researching and writing about the supernatural, I began to see a lot of overlap between the world of ghosts and the world of Witches. When we study ancient religions and belief systems, we see that Witches have always been around -- minding their own business (usually) at the fringe of society. And that's part of the point.

Altars, focusing intent, and using candles and other potions are all part of casting a spell. It's no different when the Catholic priest consecrates the bread during communion. He focuses his intent over an altar as candles burn beside him. Labels are everything. Many facets of modern-day belief systems incorporate the Pagan, the symbolism of other faiths and cultures, and the idea of communing with something larger than ourselves. Maybe Witchcraft is a thread that weaves through all peoples -- drawing us a bit closer together. It's just one idea we'll explore a little deeper this month.

It is December, which means this is the last newsletter of 2006. I want to thank every one of you for an amazing year. I want to wish you and yours a happy and safe holiday season. I also want to promise you that 2007 in the 'Village is going to be incredible. We're currently working on a redesign right now that will launch in the early part of the year. There will be new sections, lots of expanded functionality, and an even better Web experience.

Have a cool Yule!

Supernaturally yours,

Jeff Belanger

Who's Who in the Town Square?
Get to know some of your fellow Ghostvillagers.

>>erna_butter<< - member since August 9, 2004

What is your name?
Rena, Renata, RenaButter, Erna, and Coffee (gotta love kids -- lol.)

How old are you?
26

Where do you live?
Lasalle, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada

What do you do for a living?
Doing the housewife thing, which is a job in itself, ask any lady.

What has been your most profound supernatural/spiritual experience?
When I lived at my in-laws with my hubby, before we were married, I used to sleep upstairs in the kids' room. My niece, Kaitlyn, would always crawl into bed with me every night like clockwork. She would come down from the top bunk, which you could hear, and slowly come over to the head of the bed, and say, "Auntie Rena, I'm cold," so I would cover her up and we would go back to sleep. One night I heard the bed jiggle, heard her come down, felt her come across the bed (I was facing against the wall, and was very awake, since I just gotten into the bed), and waited for her to say she was cold, but I heard nothing. I thought she was sick or something, and when I turned to look... she wasn't there. She was in her own bed asleep... for once. I was quite sad, because whatever visited me was a child.

What's your favorite part of Ghostvillage.com?
Personal encounters. Because everyone's story is interesting in its own way. And everyone's caring attitude toward everyone else makes it a real family atmosphere.

What is your favorite holiday treat?
Shortbread cookies -- the way my mom makes them. And of course the eggnog.
