Dear Ghostvillagers,

It's August, which means that for millions of people around the world, baseball is on the brain. August is when the season starts to wind down and some teams look playoff bound, while others are looking at a long winter. Baseball players are among the most superstitious bunch of people on the planet. Many won't walk on the first or third base lines when coming off of the field; former Devil Ray and Yankee, Wade Boggs had to eat chicken on game day; Craig Biggio of the Astros wouldn't wash his batting helmet during the season so the dirt, tar, and sweat cakes up over the months; here in the Boston area there was talk of the Curse of Babe Ruth, which held the region in a grip of terror for 86 years until 2004 when the Red Sox won the World Series. There are countless other examples. So with all of those superstitions and curses, there must be some ghosts in there too.

This month we're going to explore the haunts, legends, and lore of the sport of baseball. To get things started for us, author Dan Gordon has written an essay about researching his brand-new book, Haunted Baseball: Ghosts, Curses, Legends, and Eerie Events, which he co-authored with Mickey Bradley. We'll talk about the quirky superstitions, the power of suggestion and belief, and the ghosts who haunt ballparks around the globe. Click here to read Dan's article.

Speaking of haunts... I'd like to send out a big thank-you to everyone who attended the Ghost World Conference in Gettysburg last month! The turnout was huge, and it was a pleasure to meet so many Ghostvillagers in one place. I have several other events coming up this Fall, and I hope to meet more of you as I get around to various other conferences and lectures.

This month I have another special announcement... this one is big, folks. I'm proud to announce the launch of a brand-new Village... UFOvillage.com! We're going to do for UFOs what Ghostvillage.com did for ghosts -- become a central portal, repository, and publication that will explore the topic of UFOs and aliens inside and out. This is just the first of several new Villages that will be launching in the near future. I'd also like to welcome UFOvillage.com's editor, Scott Fowler. Scott will be bringing you UFO research, evidence, and discussion from around the world. I invite you to head on over there and check things out. Just like Ghostvillage, the new site will be objective and explore all sides of the subject. http://www.ufovillage.com

Enjoy the rest of the newsletter below.

Supernaturally yours,

Jeff Belanger
Mayor of Ghostvillage.com

Monthly Contest
Congratulations to Max Overton of Thuringowa, Queensland, Australia, who was last month's winner of an autographed copy of Jeff Belanger's book, Our Haunted Lives, a Ghostvillage.com window sticker, and a Ghostvillage.com t-shirt!

This month, we're doing the contest again, but we ask that you first click this link: http://www.ghostvillage.com/index.shtml#winner. If it says, "The search is on" then we don't have a winner yet and go ahead and send in your answer. If you see today's date and "We have a winner!" that means you weren't the first to email us. Sorry, please try again next month.

On to this month's question: This question can be answered by reading a page on Ghostvillage.com. The first person to reply to this email with the correct answer will win this month's prize.

What is the make, model, and year of author John Kachuba's "Ghosthuntermobile"?

Once we have our winner, we will announce them on our home page as soon as possible. Good luck! (Only Ghostvillagers who have not won a prize from us in the last year are eligible.)

This month's prize: We're giving away an autographed copy of Mickey Bradley and Dan Gordon's new book, Haunted Baseball: Ghosts, Curses, Legends, and Eerie Events, a Ghostvillage.com window sticker, and a Ghostvillage.com t-shirt!

Who's Who in the Village?
Get to know some of your fellow Ghostvillagers.

>>LifeafterDeath<< - member since June 3, 2005

What is your name?
No, my real name has nothing to do with nighttime fruit, in fact my real name is Philip Markworth

How old are you?
34 years old.

Where do you live?
I live in the greater Milwaukee area of Wisconsin.

What do you do for a living?
At the moment I am an IT consultant working for a local municipality providing computer/network support for law enforcement, fire/rescue, DPW, water utilities, and City Hall departments.

What got you interested in ghosts and the supernatural?
That's a long list! Everything from library books that I was fascinated with as a youngster, to TV shows. I have also experienced a few personal events that I cannot rule out as hallucinations or an overworked imagination. Being tapped on the shoulder not once, but three times would be one heck of a hallucination and imagination!

What do you think a ghost is?
I could write a book on this! Would it be correct? Who really is correct? I feel that the term "ghost" is perhaps a bit too encompassing, but then I don't think like the norm when it comes to this stuff. What is a ghost to me? I think a ghost is a person that had a traumatic life event or experience and that all of the negative emotions, horror, or emotional anchors have them caught within a particular location. These events don't necessarily have to be a tragic accident; they could be specific emotional turmoil that didn't have a root in physical aspects. I don't consider ghosts to be prone to wandering about as say spirits are (yes, I think there is a difference). Ghosts are the people that, after death, have some serious emotional baggage that they could not or would not deal with prior to them leaving the world of the living. This has them in what I think is a detectable, sometimes interact-able level with us on this level of existence.

What is your favorite baseball team?
You knew I was from Milwaukee, didn't you? I'll throw you for a loop, though -- I'm not much of a sports fan, period. Though, I do think it's great the Brewers are doing so well after all this time.
